Barney Munro ‘79, participated in football, baseball and hockey during his high school years here at Dowling. Barney was the Captain of the 1979 DHS Football Team. During his Junior and Senior years he earned All Metro, All area honorable mention All State. In his senior year of baseball he participated in the State tournament and received honorable mention All State. During Barney’s hockey career he was team captain his senior year, Captain of the State Championship League. He was the scoring leader his sophomore, junior and senior years. He earned the honors of First Team All State his sophomore, junior and senior years, and Second Team All State his freshman year.

Barney continued his education at Creighton University, graduating from the Medical School in 1988 and completing his residency at Mount Siani Hospital in Chicago in 1992. Dr. Munro practices Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Des Moines. Barney most memorable experiences were participating in TECH, and the athletic and social activites during his years here at DHS. He will never forget the excellent role models, such as the priests, teachers and coaches especially Brian McPartland, Don Mauro and Bob Nizzi, along with his parents; Jim and Par Munro—longtime Dowling Catholic Supporters.

Barney continues to share his time and talents here at DCHS by coaching the Hockey club team, who have been the Metro Champs three of past four years. He assists the freshman and sophomore football teams. He has served as one of the “Maroons” team doctors since 2003.

Barney resides in West Des Moines with his wife Peggy and children; Ambrose, Sean, Tommy and Megan.
