Jason was involved in baseball, basketball, football and track during his time at Dowling Catholic. He started on the varsity baseball team all four years, was a three-year varsity starter in football, and started on varsity for two years in basketball. During his high school career he was named to five all CIML teams, three all-district teams, three all-state teams, and one elite all-state team. He earned all-conference honors three times in basketball and twice in football. In baseball he was named all-conference, all-district and all-state as a shortstop his junior and senior years. He helped his baseball and football teams to state champion titles.

Jason earned a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame as a shortstop in baseball. During his freshman season he started in 29 games at shortstop, batting .321 for the Irish in Big East play. He then led Iowa Western Community College to the NJCAA Division 1 National Championship with a .390 batting average, 13 doubles, eight home runs and a division and region leading 71 RBIs. Jason graduated from Old Dominion and ended his playing career after starting in 106 consecutive games and serving as team captain his senior year.
