Dick Hearn

Baseball
Graduation Year: 1942
Induction 2010

From Dick Hearn’s first year at Dowling, he pitched for the baseball team, earning a notable 6-0 record his junior year. That season Dowling made it to the state championship and played Davenport, which had only one school at the time. This was the first year Catholic high schools were allowed to play in city and state tournaments. They lost the game, but achieved second in state for the first time!

That same season a recruiter for the Cleveland Indians showed interest in Dick. This same scout also recruited Bob Feller! World War II was in full swing and many young men his age were asked to serve their country. Dick Hearn was no exception. He worked at the Des Moines ordnance plant until he shipped off to war.

Later, Dowling issued diplomas to those men who had to leave high school to go off to war. One wonders what might have been accomplished if able to pitch his senior year. Dick continues strong involvement at Dowling Catholic High School, including his many years of service as a volunteer greeter, and regular attendance at baseball, basketball, softball and football games over the years.

He is the oldest living past Dowling Club president. Aside from his loyal commitment and service to Dowling, he remains a devoted father and grandfather to his 3 children and 7 grandchildren, all of whom attended Dowling. He attends Mass every morning and has been married to his wife Bernice for 67 years.
